Binghamton, NY – Lake effect snow and strong winds are expected to create hazardous travel conditions in Binghamton through the week. A National Weather Service (NWS) wind advisory is in effect from 1 p.m. today through Thursday afternoon. Gusts of 40 to 50 mph, combined with snowfall, could make driving dangerous, particularly on Interstate 81 and other major roadways.

According to the NWS, heavy lake effect snow is forecast to begin late tonight and intensify on Thursday, with total accumulations of up to six inches in some areas by Friday evening. Visibility may drop significantly during snow squalls, with drifting snow likely. Power outages are possible due to the gusty winds, and residents are urged to secure outdoor items.

Thursday will see morning snow showers tapering off, with temperatures dropping into the mid-20s. Winds will remain brisk, creating wind chills near single digits. Snow bands are expected to shift throughout the weekend, bringing additional snowfall to parts of Broome and Chenango counties.

Looking ahead, Friday and Saturday are forecasted to bring lighter snow showers, with highs in the mid-20s and lows dipping into the teens. Travel could remain challenging, particularly on untreated roads. Sunday will bring some relief with mostly cloudy skies and temperatures peaking at 26°F.

Residents should monitor local weather updates and check road conditions before traveling. Ensure emergency kits are ready and stock up on essentials in case of power disruptions. Visit weather.gov for the latest updates and safety guidance.
