Binghamton, N.Y. – Up to two inches of rain could soak parts of the Southern Tier through Wednesday as rounds of showers and isolated thunderstorms sweep across central New York.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, widespread rain will persist through Tuesday evening, with the heaviest totals—between 1 and 2 inches—expected in Broome, Tioga, Cortland, and Susquehanna counties. Some areas could experience brief downpours or embedded storms, increasing the risk of minor flooding on low-lying roads and poor-drainage areas.

Cities including Binghamton, Ithaca, Oneonta, and Elmira should prepare for slick roads during commutes and the possibility of standing water near construction zones or storm drains. Residents are urged to check local alerts, keep gutters clear, and avoid driving through flooded roadways. While the rain isn’t expected to cause widespread damage, accumulation over several days could strain smaller streams and creeks.

This wet stretch continues a trend of unsettled spring weather for the region but should break by midweek. Improvement is expected by late Wednesday, with drier conditions and sunshine possible by Thursday and Friday.

Stay tuned for updates, as additional advisories may be issued if rainfall intensifies.
