BIG BEAR CITY, Calif. – A small earthquake shook parts of the San Bernardino Mountains on Saturday evening, registering a magnitude of 2.7 about 3 kilometers north of Big Bear City, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake struck at approximately 12:31 p.m. local time (19:31 UTC) at a depth of 6.9 kilometers. According to USGS data, the tremor was automatically recorded and confirmed as a minor seismic event, with no reports of damage or injuries as of Saturday night.

While such small quakes are common in the Big Bear region, which sits along the San Andreas Fault system, residents occasionally feel light shaking depending on local soil and structural conditions. Emergency officials remind residents that even minor quakes serve as a good reminder to review earthquake kits and secure heavy items in homes and businesses.

The USGS continues to monitor aftershocks, though none have been detected so far. No alerts or advisories were issued for nearby cities, including Running Springs, Lake Arrowhead, or San Bernardino.

Residents can report shaking experiences to the USGS “Did You Feel It?” page to help refine seismic intensity data.
