Baltimore, MD – A winter weather advisory is in effect as snow, sleet, and freezing rain move through western Maryland today, creating hazardous travel conditions, especially along I-68 and the Blue Ridge areas. Residents and travelers should expect difficult road conditions through tonight and into Monday.

According to the National Weather Service, precipitation will intensify late Sunday afternoon, beginning as rain before transitioning to freezing rain and sleet in higher elevations. Temperatures will hover near freezing, contributing to icy roadways and reduced visibility. Areas west of the Blue Ridge Mountains, including Cumberland and Hagerstown, could see significant ice accumulation and light snow, impacting travel along I-68 and other major routes.

Drivers are urged to exercise caution, slow down, and avoid unnecessary travel, particularly overnight when freezing conditions are likely to worsen. Emergency services recommend keeping extra supplies like blankets, water, and flashlights in vehicles.

The Week Ahead

Monday will see lingering freezing rain before transitioning to showers in the afternoon, with highs near 52°F. Patchy fog is expected overnight, reducing visibility further. Tuesday brings a slight chance of morning showers, followed by clearing skies and mild temperatures near 63°F.

Rain chances increase Wednesday and Thursday, with highs in the mid-50s, as another front brings more unsettled weather. Cooler conditions return by Friday, with mostly sunny skies and temperatures reaching the low 40s.

Residents should monitor local updates and prepare for changing conditions throughout the week.
