Baltimore, Maryland – New Cold Weather Advisories and Extreme Cold Warnings are in effect across the Mid-Atlantic tonight into Sunday morning as dangerously low wind chills spread across Maryland, northern Virginia, and the District of Columbia.

According to the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington, wind chill values are expected to fall to between zero and 10 degrees below zero across advisory areas, with even colder conditions in warning zones. In parts of western Maryland, the Shenandoah Valley, and higher elevations, wind chills could drop to 20 degrees below zero by early Sunday morning.

Extreme Cold Warnings are in effect for portions of western Maryland and eastern West Virginia, including areas near Interstate 68 and Interstate 81. Cold Weather Advisories cover much of central Maryland, northern Virginia, and the Washington–Baltimore corridor, including areas along Interstate 95, Interstate 70, and Interstate 66.

The coldest conditions are expected overnight through early Sunday morning. Officials warn that frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 10 to 30 minutes under these conditions, especially when wind speeds remain elevated.

Residents are urged to avoid prolonged outdoor exposure, dress in multiple warm layers, and cover all exposed skin if travel is necessary. The National Weather Service also emphasizes protecting the “four Ps” — people, pets, plants, and pipes. Pets should be brought indoors, pipes insulated or allowed to drip, and vulnerable neighbors checked on.

Travelers and early-morning commuters along major roadways, including I-95 between Baltimore and Washington, I-70 near Frederick, and I-81 in the Shenandoah Valley, should prepare for extreme cold impacts if stranded or delayed.

Temperatures are expected to slowly improve later Sunday, but officials stress that this is a high-risk cold event for the region and should be taken seriously until warnings and advisories expire.
