Ferndale, CA – Two earthquakes struck off California’s northern coast on Wednesday, registering magnitudes of 4.4 and 4.0.

The first quake, measuring 4.4, hit at 3:36 a.m. about 145 kilometers west-northwest of Petrolia. The second, a magnitude 4.0 tremor, followed at 5:10 a.m. roughly 133 kilometers west of Ferndale. Both quakes originated at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The quakes occurred in a seismically active region near the Mendocino Triple Junction. USGS reports no significant damage or injuries, but the shaking was light to moderate in nearby areas.

Residents are encouraged to report their experiences on the USGS “Did You Feel It?” platform. These reports help scientists refine intensity maps and improve preparedness measures.

The region, known for frequent seismic activity, remains under watch for potential aftershocks. Emergency services advise coastal residents to remain alert.
