Austin, Texas – National Weather Service teams are on the ground in Austin Thursday morning, surveying damage left behind by a powerful thunderstorm that swept through Travis County Wednesday night, snapping trees, flooding streets, and clocking wind gusts up to 77 mph.

According to the NWS Austin/San Antonio office, the strongest wind reading was recorded at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport as the storm moved east across the city just after 9 p.m. Hail and localized flooding were also reported throughout the metro area. The storm’s core, tracked by radar, affected a wide swath from Lago Vista and Cedar Park through downtown Austin and eastward into Del Valle and Elroy.

Crews are now assessing some of the hardest-hit zones shaded in blue on official maps, including neighborhoods near U.S. Highway 290, I-35, and State Highway 71. While not all areas in the path saw damage, residents are encouraged to report downed trees, roof issues, or flooding to assist with the ongoing survey effort.

Residents should avoid debris-filled roads and watch for potential power outages as cleanup begins. Officials remind locals to stay clear of damaged areas and allow crews space to conduct assessments safely.

More updates are expected later today as survey teams complete their analysis.
