Flagstaff, Arizona – Strong winds barreled across northern Arizona Saturday, toppling trees, causing hazardous driving conditions, and prompting travel warnings in Navajo and Coconino counties. Gusts peaked at 55 mph in Limestone Canyon and over 50 mph at the Grand Canyon Airport, raising concerns for motorists and outdoor plans.

According to the National Weather Service in Flagstaff, the highest gusts were recorded between 12 p.m. and 6 p.m., with Navajo, Coconino, Apache, and Yavapai counties all reporting winds above 45 mph. Key locations hit hardest included Winslow Airport (47 mph), Flagstaff Airport (48 mph), and I-40 at Crookton (49 mph).

Drivers on I-40 and State Route 260 faced especially difficult travel, as crosswinds threatened to overturn high-profile vehicles and reduce visibility due to blowing dust. The Arizona Department of Transportation advised limiting travel and securing loose outdoor objects. Power outages and downed tree limbs were reported in scattered areas.

Saturday’s event ranks among the windiest days of the season, with conditions similar to early spring wind storms seen in recent years. Winds are expected to subside overnight, but residents should remain alert for lingering debris and possible updated advisories Sunday morning.
