Phoenix, Arizona – Strong winds, surging dust, and a high pollution warning are converging in Phoenix this Monday, raising both health and travel concerns.
The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality has issued a PM-10 High Pollution Advisory for the Phoenix Metro Area through Sunday night and into Monday. According to the National Weather Service in Phoenix, south winds are expected to intensify throughout the day Monday, with gusts reaching up to 28 mph. These conditions will continue to stir up dust and coarse particulate matter, creating hazardous air quality across Maricopa County.
PM-10, a form of air pollution made up of tiny particles, can aggravate heart and lung issues, especially for older adults, children, and people with asthma. Authorities recommend reducing physical activity outdoors and avoiding dusty areas like dirt roads and construction sites. Use of gas-powered lawn equipment and wood-burning fireplaces should be avoided.
South Central Avenue, Loop 202, and the I-10 corridor may be especially impacted by blowing dust during Monday afternoon’s commute. Drivers are urged to slow down or delay travel if visibility drops.
This marks one of the first major spring air quality alerts of the season in Phoenix. Looking ahead, the region will see some relief as winds calm by Tuesday night, with sunny and warm conditions returning by Wednesday.
