Flagstaff, Arizona – Arizona residents should stay alert Wednesday as dangerous flash flooding threatens popular hiking routes, roadways, and low-lying areas across Coconino and Yavapai counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Flagstaff, a Flood Watch remains in effect until 11:00 p.m. Wednesday, with heavy rainfall continuing to increase runoff risk across canyons and recently burned terrain. Key locations include the Grand Canyon, Oak Creek Canyon, Sycamore Canyon, and U.S. Highway 89. Raging floodwaters may develop rapidly in washes and slot canyons, especially in areas with poor drainage or wildfire scars.
Flash flooding will be most likely in the afternoon and early evening hours. Officials warn that “normally dry creeks and crossings could become deadly,” and that low-water crossings should be avoided altogether. Outdoor recreation is strongly discouraged through the evening. Residents should be ready to act if warnings are upgraded.
Skies clear by Thursday, bringing a stretch of warm, dry weather across northern Arizona.
