Tucson, Arizona – A blast of dangerous heat is on the way for southern Arizona, with triple-digit temperatures expected to peak by Wednesday at 112°F, triggering an Extreme Heat Watch for Tucson and surrounding areas. But first, scattered thunderstorms Monday afternoon could bring brief relief — and risk — to the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Tucson, a 30% chance of thunderstorms will develop after 2 p.m. Monday, mainly impacting Pima County and metro Tucson. Winds may gust up to 29 mph, reducing visibility and creating hazardous driving along Interstate 10 and State Route 86. Residents should avoid non-essential travel during afternoon hours and stay weather-aware in case of lightning or localized flooding.

By midweek, high pressure intensifies, sending temperatures soaring. Wednesday’s high of 112°F will be the hottest of the week, with overnight lows failing to drop below the low 80s. The Extreme Heat Watch is active from 10 a.m. Wednesday to 8 p.m. MST, with the risk of heat-related illness especially high for outdoor workers and vulnerable populations. Residents should limit time outdoors, hydrate frequently, and check on neighbors.

Clouds and storm chances return late Wednesday night, but temperatures remain oppressive through Thursday, with highs near 108°F.
