Flagstaff, AZ – A winter storm system is forecast to bring snow, gusty winds, and colder temperatures to northeastern Arizona starting Tuesday afternoon, creating potentially hazardous travel conditions on Interstate 40 and surrounding roadways. Residents should prepare for snow accumulations and reduced visibility in affected areas.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Flagstaff office, snowfall is expected to begin late Tuesday morning, with stronger winds and heavier snow persisting into the night. Snow levels are predicted to fall below 4,500 feet, with Flagstaff and areas northeast of the Mogollon Rim seeing up to 2 inches of accumulation. Travelers should drive cautiously, especially in the evening when gusts up to 29 mph could cause blowing snow and slick roads.
Tuesday’s high is projected to reach 34°F before temperatures plummet to 20°F overnight. The cold snap continues Wednesday with highs near 33°F and similar snow conditions through the morning. Winds are expected to calm by Wednesday evening as skies clear.
Looking ahead, Thursday and Friday will see sunny weather with highs rising to the mid-40s. However, nighttime lows will remain below freezing, increasing the risk of icy patches on roadways.
NWS advises residents to monitor weather updates, avoid unnecessary travel during peak snow hours, and dress warmly when venturing outdoors.
