Tucson, Arizona – Record-shattering heat will scorch much of Arizona this week, putting millions under an Extreme Heat Warning from Tucson and Safford to the floor of the Grand Canyon. Afternoon temperatures are set to soar between 108°F and 115°F through at least Thursday, raising urgent concerns for heat-related illnesses and power demand.

According to the National Weather Service in Tucson and Flagstaff, the warning extends from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day through Wednesday in southern Arizona—including Tucson, Sells, Ajo, Green Valley, and Vail—as well as northern Gila and Yavapai counties like Payson and Cottonwood. For the Grand Canyon below 4,000 feet—including Phantom Ranch and Havasupai Gardens—the alert stretches from Monday through Thursday night.

Major roads such as I-10, I-19, and State Route 86 may see increased breakdowns and roadside emergencies as the pavement bakes. City services in Tucson and Marana have activated cooling centers, while parks in Oracle and Mammoth are warning visitors to stay off trails by midday. School summer programs in Safford and Clifton are urging students to limit outdoor activity.

Residents should move strenuous activities to early morning or late evening, wear loose clothing, and drink extra water. Never leave children or pets in vehicles, as interiors can become deadly within minutes. The risk for power outages may increase as air conditioners run full tilt.

These extreme temperatures rival Arizona’s 2021 heat wave, with little relief expected before Thursday evening. Stay updated as further advisories may follow, especially if power grids or infrastructure become strained.
