Tucson, AZ – A freeze watch has been issued across much of southern Arizona, with sub-freezing temperatures expected late Tuesday night through Wednesday morning. Residents are urged to prepare for potentially damaging cold conditions.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures are forecasted to dip into the upper 20s and lower 30s across the Tucson Metro area, the Tohono O’odham Nation, and parts of Pinal County. These conditions could harm sensitive vegetation, outdoor plumbing, and crops.
Residents should take action now to protect plants and outdoor water systems. Experts suggest covering plants with breathable fabric and insulating exposed pipes to prevent freezing. Pets should also be brought indoors overnight to avoid exposure to cold temperatures.
Drivers commuting early Wednesday morning should be cautious on bridges and overpasses, which may freeze first. Arizona Department of Transportation officials advise checking road conditions before traveling, especially along I-10 and other major highways in the region.
The freeze watch is part of a broader cold spell moving through the state, bringing the first significant frost to southern Arizona this season. While daytime highs are expected to rebound into the 60s by Thursday, nighttime temperatures could remain near freezing in some areas for the next few days.
