Denver/Boulder, Colo. — Arctic air will remain in place across northeast Colorado and the plains through Sunday, bringing dangerously cold temperatures, very low wind chills, and periods of light snow, according to the National Weather Service in Denver/Boulder.
By Friday morning, temperatures are expected to dip into the single digits in many areas, with lows likely falling below zero in most locations by Saturday morning. Gusty winds across the eastern plains could push wind chills as low as -20°F, making frostbite possible in less than 30 minutes.
Light snow will develop across the plains through Friday, becoming more widespread Friday night, then tapering from north to south on Saturday. While accumulations are expected to be light, snow and cold pavement will still lead to slick and hazardous travel, including during the Friday PM commute and Saturday ski traffic along the I-70/U.S. 40 corridors.
Mountain areas will see more snowfall, with 4–12 inches expected along the I-70 Mountain Corridor and much of Summit County, which may further impact travel through mountain passes.
What to do now:
- Dress in layers, including a hat and mittens; cover exposed skin.
- Limit time outdoors and take breaks to warm up.
- Plan for slick roads; slow down and allow extra travel time.
- Check on vulnerable individuals and bring pets indoors.
Conditions remain cold through the weekend with only a slight warmup Sunday. Continue to monitor official NWS updates as timing and impacts are refined.
