Anchorage, AK – The National Weather Service has issued Blizzard Warnings covering large portions of central, western, and southern Alaska through Sunday and Monday, warning of whiteout conditions, 60 mph winds, and life-threatening cold.

According to the Anchorage and Fairbanks Weather Service offices, blizzard conditions are ongoing across the Kuskokwim Delta Coast, Nunivak Island, Denali Borough, Northern Susitna Valley, and Thompson Pass. Visibility may drop below one-quarter mile, and wind chills are forecast to plunge between –35°F and –60°F.

In the Kuskokwim Delta, winds up to 60 mph are causing blowing and drifting snow, while in the Dalton Highway and Alaska Range, temperatures combined with high winds may produce frostbite within minutes.

Officials urge residents to avoid all non-essential travel, as conditions are expected to remain hazardous through Monday afternoon, with the strongest winds persisting near mountain passes and coastal areas.

If travel is unavoidable, forecasters stress carrying a winter survival kit, dressing in multiple insulated layers, and staying with your vehicle if stranded.

These warnings remain in effect through Monday afternoon, December 8, with gradual improvement expected late Monday into Tuesday.
