Amarillo, TX – Residents of the Texas Panhandle should prepare for snow showers and freezing drizzle Sunday, with icy roads and reduced visibility creating hazardous travel conditions. The National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the northeastern Panhandle, predicting up to one inch of snow and light ice accumulation.
According to the NWS, freezing drizzle is already impacting areas northeast of Amarillo, including US-287 and I-40 corridors. Drivers should exercise caution, as slick roads and low visibility could cause delays or accidents. Wind gusts reaching 50 mph will compound travel risks, especially for high-profile vehicles.
Sunday’s high is forecast at 33°F with wind chills dropping as low as 7°F. Breezy conditions will persist throughout the day, with northerly winds between 25 and 35 mph. By evening, temperatures will plummet to 16°F, with lighter winds around 10 mph.
Looking ahead, the Panhandle will see mostly sunny skies Monday, but temperatures will remain cold, with a high near 42°F and light winds. A slight chance of snow showers returns Tuesday night into Thursday, as temperatures struggle to rise above 40°F.
Officials recommend securing outdoor items, limiting travel, and staying informed on weather updates. Anyone traveling early Sunday morning should check conditions in advance.
