Anchorage, Alaska – A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect Tuesday for parts of Bristol Bay, where mixed precipitation, icing, and gusty winds are expected to create hazardous travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Anchorage, the advisory covers Inland Bristol Bay and the Northern Bristol Bay Coast, including Dillingham, New Stuyahok, Manokotak, Aleknagik, Togiak, and Koliganek. The advisory is in effect from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. AKST Tuesday.
Snow accumulations of 1 to 2 inches are expected, along with ice accumulations up to one-tenth of an inch, particularly from New Stuyahok to Koliganek, where the highest icing amounts are forecast. In addition, northeast winds may gust up to 35 mph, which could further reduce visibility and worsen travel conditions.
Forecasters note that the onset of precipitation has been delayed until Tuesday morning, with the worst conditions expected from late morning through late afternoon. During this time, slick roads, icing on untreated surfaces, and difficult travel conditions are likely across the advisory area.
As temperatures gradually warm Tuesday evening and overnight, remaining precipitation is expected to transition to rain, which may help improve conditions later in the night. However, hazardous travel may persist into the evening hours before that changeover occurs.
The National Weather Service advises motorists to slow down and use caution while traveling, especially during the peak impact window Tuesday afternoon. Travel could be very difficult at times due to the combination of snow, ice, wind, and reduced visibility.
Additional updates will be issued if conditions change or if the advisory needs to be extended or expanded.
