Fairbanks, Alaska – Drivers crossing the Brooks Range should brace for hazardous conditions Thursday evening through late Friday as a winter storm threatens to dump up to 11 inches of snow on key stretches of the Dalton Highway.

According to the National Weather Service in Fairbanks, areas south of Toolik Lake — including Atigun Pass, Anaktuvuk Pass, and Galbraith Lake — are under a Winter Storm Watch starting Thursday at 6 p.m. and lasting through midnight Friday. Snowfall totals could range from 5 to 11 inches, with travel becoming increasingly difficult, especially along mileposts 232 to 322.

Precipitation is expected to begin as rain or a rain-snow mix before transitioning to all snow by Wednesday. The heaviest snow is forecast for Thursday night into Friday. Although totals remain uncertain, transportation officials warn the Dalton Highway could become treacherous heading into the weekend.

Travelers are urged to delay non-essential trips, carry emergency supplies, and monitor 511.alaska.gov for road conditions. Commercial drivers should anticipate chain-up requirements and potential delays at the passes.

Warnings remain in effect through Friday night, with more advisories possible if snow bands intensify.
