Fairbanks, AK – Alaska residents are bracing for the year’s first extreme cold warning this weekend, with wind chills expected to reach a life-threatening -60°F. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an urgent advisory for parts of the White Mountains, Fortymile Country, and high terrain south of the Yukon River.
According to the NWS, the warning is in effect from 3 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday, impacting areas including the Dalton Highway, Eagle Summit, and Chicken. The dangerously cold conditions pose a severe frostbite risk, with exposed skin freezing in just five minutes.
Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for extreme conditions. Dress in layers, wear insulated gear, and protect exposed skin with hats, gloves, and face masks. Those traveling should pack emergency supplies, including blankets, food, and water.
The NWS warns that the cold will make roads treacherous and outdoor activities dangerous. Local authorities are also advising residents to check on vulnerable neighbors and ensure pets are sheltered.
