Anchorage, AK – A blizzard warning has been issued for the Kuskokwim Delta, including Bethel and Nunivak Island, as heavy snowfall and powerful winds are expected to create dangerous conditions through Sunday evening. The National Weather Service warns that snowfall totals could reach up to 26 inches in some areas.
The warning, in effect until 9 p.m. Sunday, also includes wind gusts up to 50 mph, reducing visibility to a quarter mile or less. According to the National Weather Service, the heaviest snowfall is forecast for areas south of Bethel, including Quinhagak, while coastal regions such as Kipnuk and Toksook Bay will see lighter accumulations.
Officials caution that wind chills could drop as low as 25 below zero, posing a frostbite risk in just 30 minutes. Blizzard conditions are expected to intensify Saturday evening as winds strengthen, further complicating travel.
Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel. If travel is unavoidable, authorities recommend carrying a winter survival kit and preparing for whiteout conditions.
