Fairbanks, AK – A powerful blizzard is set to impact western Alaska, bringing life-threatening cold and hazardous travel conditions. The National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Warning for the Yukon Delta Coast and St. Lawrence Island from 6 a.m. Thursday to 3 a.m. Friday (AKST).

According to the National Weather Service in Fairbanks, winds up to 50 mph and snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches will create whiteout conditions, making travel extremely dangerous. Wind chills could plunge to 50 degrees below zero, posing a severe risk of frostbite in under 10 minutes.

Residents in Mountain Village, Emmonak, Hooper Bay, Gambell, Savoonga, and surrounding areas should prepare for treacherous conditions. Visibility may be near zero due to blowing and drifting snow.

Officials urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel and dress in multiple warm layers if venturing outside. Those in affected areas should ensure they have emergency supplies, including food, water, and backup heat sources.

The storm is expected to subside by early Friday morning, but hazardous conditions may persist. Travelers should check local advisories before heading out.
