HUNTSVILLE, AL – Black ice is creating hazardous road conditions across parts of northern Alabama as a winter weather advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. today. Subfreezing temperatures overnight have caused water from melting snow to freeze, leaving roads, especially bridges and overpasses, slick and dangerous.

According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, the advisory impacts portions of north-central, northeast, and northwest Alabama, as well as southern middle Tennessee. Travelers are urged to reduce speed and drive with caution, particularly on I-565, U.S. 72, and local county roads. Pedestrians are also advised to tread carefully, as sidewalks and steps may be icy.

Conditions are expected to improve by late morning as temperatures climb to a high of 35°F under mostly cloudy skies. However, patchy freezing fog is forecast for tonight, with lows dipping to 19°F, continuing the risk of icy spots into Sunday morning.

Looking ahead, Sunday will see partly sunny skies and calmer conditions, with highs near 40°F. Monday and Tuesday bring sunnier skies and slightly warmer temperatures, with highs reaching 41°F and 35°F, respectively, though Monday night will be frigid with a low of 17°F.

Residents should monitor weather updates and plan travel accordingly, avoiding unnecessary trips until road conditions improve. The latest updates can be obtained by calling 511 for state road information.
