Huntsville, AL – Northern Alabama and southern Tennessee are facing hazardous travel conditions this morning as freezing temperatures create black ice on roads and bridges.

According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. Saturday. Overnight snowmelt has refrozen, creating slick conditions on major thoroughfares and secondary roads. Bridges and overpasses are particularly at risk of icing, officials said.

Drivers are urged to exercise extreme caution. Roadways across north-central, northeast, and northwest Alabama, as well as southern middle Tennessee, are affected. Communities impacted include Huntsville, Florence, Decatur, and Scottsboro in Alabama, along with Fayetteville and Winchester in Tennessee.

The advisory comes after a brief warmup Friday afternoon melted snow from earlier in the week. As temperatures dipped below freezing overnight, water left on the pavement solidified into dangerous black ice. These nearly invisible patches can cause cars to lose traction unexpectedly.

The National Weather Service advises reducing speed, leaving extra stopping distance, and avoiding sudden braking or acceleration. Motorists should also steer clear of icy bridges whenever possible.

Residents venturing outdoors should take care on sidewalks, driveways, and stairs, which are prone to becoming slippery. Emergency management agencies recommend wearing sturdy shoes with good traction and watching every step.

The latest road conditions can be checked by calling 511. Officials remind drivers that patience and preparation are key to avoiding accidents during icy weather.

The advisory is expected to end by mid-morning as sunlight and rising temperatures melt residual ice. However, shaded areas and elevated surfaces may remain slick for longer.
