Birmingham, AL – Residents across Central Alabama are being urged to avoid travel as a winter storm continues to impact the region, bringing snow and ice accumulations through Saturday morning. I-20, especially between Birmingham and Heflin, is particularly hazardous due to slick conditions caused by freezing rain.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 a.m. Saturday for Birmingham and surrounding counties, including Jefferson, St. Clair, and Cleburne. The storm is expected to bring up to two inches of snow and sleet, along with dangerous ice accumulations. Wind gusts of up to 25 mph may exacerbate freezing conditions, increasing the likelihood of icy bridges and overpasses.
Motorists are strongly advised to delay travel plans. If travel is unavoidable, drivers should carry emergency supplies, including a flashlight, water, and a fully charged phone. Areas along and north of I-20 are expected to experience the worst conditions, with significant delays and possible closures likely.
Looking ahead, the weekend forecast shows gradual improvement. Saturday will be partly sunny with a high near 37°F, but temperatures will dip to the low 20s overnight. Sunday will bring sunshine and slightly warmer highs in the low 40s, offering some relief from icy conditions.
Residents should continue monitoring updates from the NWS for the latest information. Power outages and fallen tree limbs may occur in ice-affected areas, so local utilities advise preparing for potential disruptions.
Stay informed and exercise caution as Alabama navigates this severe weather event.
