Birmingham, AL – Residents across central Alabama are bracing for hazardous travel conditions as a winter storm continues to impact the region. Heavy snow, sleet, and ice are expected to accumulate through early Saturday morning.
According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 a.m. Saturday. Forecasters predict an additional 1 to 2 inches of snow and sleet, along with up to two-tenths of an inch of ice. Areas affected include Blount, Calhoun, Cherokee, Jefferson, and surrounding counties.
The warning issued early Friday highlights significant travel disruptions, especially on bridges and overpasses. Roads are expected to become slick and hazardous, with impacts likely during Friday’s morning and evening commutes. Authorities urge drivers to delay travel unless absolutely necessary.
“The hazardous conditions will persist, particularly on untreated roadways,” the advisory states. “Those who must travel should prepare for emergencies by carrying a flashlight, food, and water in their vehicles.”
Residents across Birmingham, Anniston, and Gadsden are urged to monitor updates and avoid travel if possible. City officials and first responders are prepared to address emergencies and assist stranded motorists. Schools in several affected areas have announced closures or delays for Friday and Saturday.
Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing throughout Friday night, making ice removal and road clearing efforts more challenging. Power outages are also possible due to ice accumulation on power lines and trees.
As the storm progresses, Alabama residents are encouraged to stay informed through local weather updates and follow safety precautions.
