Birmingham, AL – A cold weather advisory remains in effect across Alabama from midnight tonight until 11 a.m. CST Monday, with wind chills dipping as low as 2°F. Residents are urged to prepare for dangerous conditions that could lead to frostbite or hypothermia.

According to the National Weather Service, the advisory impacts numerous counties, including Jefferson, Shelby, Tuscaloosa, Montgomery, and Lee. Overnight temperatures will drop well below freezing, and exposed skin risks frostbite within minutes. Unprotected pipes may burst, potentially causing property damage.

Residents should take precautions by wearing layered clothing, hats, and gloves when venturing outdoors. It’s also essential to keep pets indoors, check on vulnerable neighbors, and ensure heating devices are used safely. Portable heaters and generators should never be operated indoors due to carbon monoxide risks.

To minimize the risk of freezing pipes, let faucets drip slowly, drain unused water lines, or wrap exposed pipes with insulation.

The extreme cold is expected to ease by late Monday morning, but officials warn against complacency, urging residents to stay vigilant overnight.
