Birmingham, AL – A High Risk for severe weather has been issued for much of Alabama on Saturday, with threats continuing into early Sunday. Forecasters warn of strong, long-tracked tornadoes, damaging winds up to 70 mph, and large hail up to 2 inches in diameter.

According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, the severe weather threat will intensify Saturday afternoon, particularly in central and southern Alabama, including Birmingham, Montgomery, and Tuscaloosa. The storms are expected to develop between noon and 2 p.m., persisting into the overnight hours. The highest risk for tornadoes and large hail is in areas under the Level 5 warning, where conditions are favorable for violent storms.

Residents are advised to stay alert and have multiple ways to receive emergency warnings. Power outages, fallen trees, and structural damage are possible due to high winds. Officials recommend preparing an emergency plan, securing outdoor objects, and identifying a safe shelter location in advance.

Travel may be hazardous as strong winds and heavy rain could lead to flooding in low-lying areas. Drivers are urged to avoid travel during peak storm hours and to monitor updates from local authorities.

The storm system is expected to move eastward by early Sunday, reducing the severe weather threat. However, lingering storms may continue to impact parts of the state through Sunday morning. Stay informed through the National Weather Service and local emergency alerts.
