BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for much of Alabama’s southern and eastern regions, including Montgomery and Troy, through 10 p.m. CDT on Saturday, May 3, 2025. The watch comes as strong storms are expected to develop throughout the afternoon and evening.
According to the National Weather Service, the threat includes possible tornadoes, with a couple of twisters being a potential risk, especially in areas near Montgomery and the Georgia border. Hail up to the size of ping pong balls and wind gusts reaching 70 mph are also possible. Residents across the affected areas, including the cities of LaGrange, Columbus, and Atlanta, should stay alert.
In addition to the dangerous weather, heavy rain and frequent lightning may impact travel, particularly along major highways like I-85 and I-75. Drivers should prepare for possible road closures or hazardous driving conditions if severe storms arrive unexpectedly.
Local schools and hospitals, which serve over 7.6 million people across the watch zone, should remain vigilant. As the storm system continues, more alerts could be issued, and residents are advised to monitor updates from local authorities and weather services.
Stay indoors and away from windows during severe weather.
