Mobile, AL – Hazardous fog is expected to develop across both land and water early Saturday morning, bringing dangerous visibility levels to drivers and boaters along the central Gulf Coast.
According to the National Weather Service in Mobile, a Dense Fog Advisory is in effect from 2 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday for Northern Mobile Bay, Southern Mobile Bay, and the Mississippi Sound. Visibility is expected to fall to one nautical mile or less, making navigation difficult for small craft and commercial vessels. Forecasters say dense fog may also drift southward into a portion of the offshore coastal Alabama zone.
A separate inland Dense Fog Advisory covers portions of south-central and southwest Alabama, northwest Florida, and southeast Mississippi from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. Saturday. The advisory includes communities such as Mobile, Daphne, Fairhope, Foley, Evergreen, Brewton, Andalusia, Crestview, Wiggins, Lucedale, and Monroeville. According to forecasters, visibility on roads may drop to one quarter mile or less.
Meteorologists warn that both marine and inland travelers should expect sudden, sharp visibility reductions during the pre-dawn hours. Fog is likely to form as winds remain light and moisture accumulates near the surface, potentially impacting bridges, low-lying roadways, and major boat channels.
Boaters are urged to use radar, proper fog signals, and running lights. Drivers are advised to slow down, use headlights, and leave additional distance between vehicles.
