Birmingham, Alabama – Dangerously high heat indices combined with rising rain chances could create hazardous conditions across Alabama through the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, heat index values are expected to climb into the upper 90s and reach as high as 101°F in cities like Montgomery, Tuscaloosa, and Gadsden by Sunday and Monday. The agency warns of moderate heat-related health risks, especially for those without access to cooling or hydration. Peak heat is expected from Saturday through Monday.

Rain chances will also surge, driven by incoming tropical moisture. Afternoon storms could produce brief heavy downpours, particularly on Saturday and Sunday, with rainfall probabilities topping 75% across most of central Alabama. While rainfall totals are expected to stay under 1 inch, localized flooding can’t be ruled out during intense storms.

In Birmingham, the heat index could reach 100°F by Sunday, with a 75% chance of rain that same day. Residents in Eufaula, Troy, and Anniston should also prepare for high heat and elevated storm chances starting Friday afternoon.

To stay safe, limit outdoor activity during peak heat, drink water frequently, and use air conditioning if available. Afternoon storms may disrupt outdoor events or travel, so monitor local alerts.

Heat advisories may be issued later this week as conditions intensify.
