Huntsville, Ala. – North Alabama’s tornado count rose to 13 on Thursday night as the National Weather Service confirmed four additional tornadoes from the May 20 outbreak — including an EF-2 in Killingsworth Cove with peak winds of 134 mph.
According to preliminary storm survey data released at 8:45 p.m. by NWS Huntsville, crews identified new tornado tracks in Morgan, Jackson, and Lauderdale counties. A waterspout that came ashore near Waterloo/Wright in Lauderdale County is also under review, with drone imagery expected to confirm it as a 14th tornado next week.
The latest additions include the Ford City EF-1 tornado (17.74-mile path), the Priceville EF-1 (11.02 miles), the Dement Branch EF-1, and an EF-2 that struck Killingsworth Cove. Fortunately, most tornadoes caused no fatalities, though one injury was reported in Ford City.
Residents are urged to review emergency plans and stay alert, as this was one of the region’s most active tornado days in recent years. Some tracks have been adjusted in width and duration, including Killingsworth Cove’s.
More updates are expected once aerial assessments are completed. Weather alerts remain active in the region pending additional findings.
