Birmingham, Alabama – Mother’s Day plans across Alabama could face weather disruptions Sunday afternoon as a low chance of severe storms moves through the region, bringing the threat of damaging winds and large hail.

According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, the greatest risk period is between 3 p.m. and 11 p.m. Sunday. While widespread severe weather isn’t expected, isolated storms could produce wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour and hail up to the size of a quarter.

Cities including Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Anniston, and Montgomery are under a marginal risk level. Drivers and those spending time outdoors should remain alert for quickly changing weather conditions. Officials advise having multiple ways to receive alerts and knowing where your nearest safe shelter is located.

If you plan to travel on I-20, I-65, or U.S. Highway 231 during the afternoon and evening hours, keep an eye on rapidly developing storms. Those hosting or attending Mother’s Day gatherings are encouraged to check weather updates regularly and move activities indoors if necessary.

This weather threat is expected to end by late Sunday night, but officials caution that additional advisories may be issued if storm activity intensifies. Stay tuned for further updates from the National Weather Service.
