Birmingham, Ala. – Strong to severe thunderstorms could rattle much of central and southern Alabama today, with the potential for damaging winds and quarter-sized hail lasting through 5 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, a marginal risk (Level 1 of 5) covers nearly the entire state, with scattered storms expected from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wind gusts could reach 60 mph in isolated cells, and hail may reach up to one inch in diameter.
Cities including Montgomery, Clanton, Birmingham, and Selma are in the impact zone. Highway 65 and I-20 drivers may face sudden downpours and strong wind gusts, reducing visibility and increasing the risk of roadway debris. The NWS recommends securing outdoor items and keeping cell phones charged in case of brief power outages.
While this isn’t a widespread outbreak, even brief severe storms can cause localized damage. “We’ve got to make it to the weekend to get some dry weather,” NWS Birmingham noted in a social media update early Wednesday.
Storm risks taper off after sunset, but another round can’t be ruled out later this week. Stay weather-aware and check back for updates.
