Birmingham, Alabama – Storms packing large hail and damaging winds could sweep across northern and central Alabama through 10 p.m. Thursday, triggering a Severe Thunderstorm Watch that includes cities from Muscle Shoals to Gadsden.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, supercells developing east of Mississippi are expected to intensify as they move across the Tennessee Valley region this afternoon and evening. These storms could bring hail up to 2 inches in diameter and wind gusts reaching 70 mph.
Areas under the watch include Huntsville, Decatur, Cullman, and Anniston, along with parts of southern Middle Tennessee, including Lawrenceburg and Fayetteville. The storms may organize into clusters, increasing the risk of widespread wind damage—especially along I-65 and US-72 corridors. Power outages and downed trees are possible.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, remain indoors during warnings, and monitor NOAA Weather Radio or local alerts for real-time updates. Motorists should avoid driving through heavy rain and be alert for sudden drops in visibility or flying debris.
This Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 10 p.m., with additional warnings likely as the system continues eastward. Stay weather-aware into the evening as more storms may develop ahead of a cold front.
