Birmingham, Ala. – A widespread severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for much of northern and central Alabama until 10 p.m. CDT Thursday, with more than 2.3 million residents at risk for damaging winds, large hail, and frequent lightning.
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, scattered storms capable of producing hail up to two inches in diameter and wind gusts reaching 70 mph are likely across cities including Birmingham, Huntsville, Florence, and Gadsden. The watch covers at least 758 schools and 55 hospitals, raising concerns for public safety during afternoon and evening commutes.
Residents in Jasper, Cullman, Albertville, and Russellville are urged to secure outdoor objects and remain indoors as storms approach. Power outages and fallen trees are possible, especially along the I-65 corridor from Decatur to Birmingham. Lightning activity will also be frequent, increasing risk for those outdoors.
Drivers should delay travel if possible, especially on elevated roadways, where sudden gusts may reduce control. If sheltering in a vehicle, avoid parking under trees or near power lines.
The storm threat will taper off after 10 p.m., but additional watches or warnings may be issued as conditions evolve. Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or local alerts for updates.
