Birmingham, Alabama – Heat indices in Central Alabama could spike as high as 102° through Saturday afternoon, posing a moderate risk of heat-related illness and stressing vulnerable communities and industries.
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, a prolonged stretch of dangerously hot weather will impact areas including Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Montgomery, Auburn, and Demopolis. Peak heat indices between 95° and 102° are expected both Friday and Saturday afternoons, increasing the chance of heat stress, particularly for individuals without access to air conditioning or hydration.
Health officials are urging residents to avoid prolonged outdoor activity, check on elderly neighbors, and keep pets indoors. Outdoor workers and those in heat-sensitive industries should take frequent breaks and stay hydrated. Emergency services may also see a rise in heat-related calls, especially in urban zones with limited shade or cooling centers.
Cooling shelters across Jefferson and Montgomery counties are expected to open Friday afternoon. This is the first major heat event of the season and comes earlier than last year’s comparable stretch in mid-June.
Heat alerts remain in effect through Saturday evening, and additional advisories could be issued if temperatures continue to rise.
