Birmingham, AL – A tornado watch remains in effect until 10 a.m. CDT Sunday for parts of central and southwest Alabama, northwest Georgia, and far southeast Mississippi as strong storms move across the Southeast.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, the watch was issued at 2:45 a.m. and includes cities such as Birmingham, Montgomery, Rome (GA), and areas near the Mississippi-Alabama border. Thunderstorms capable of producing damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph and a few tornadoes are possible throughout the morning.
Forecasters say low-level wind patterns remain favorable for embedded tornado activity within the storm line, particularly where isolated supercells form ahead of the main system. The most at-risk areas lie within 45 miles north and south of a line from southwest of Birmingham to southeast of Rome.
Residents are urged to remain alert and monitor weather updates. If a tornado warning is issued, take shelter immediately in a basement or interior room away from windows.
This storm system continues a trend of active early April weather in the region, following a week of unsettled conditions across the Deep South. Additional alerts may be issued as the situation evolves.
