Birmingham, AL – Tornadoes touched down across Alabama on Saturday night, prompting multiple warnings and emergency alerts as severe storms swept through the South. Areas of Georgia and Tennessee also faced potential tornado activity as the storms moved northeast at high speeds.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, a confirmed tornado was on the ground near Ashby in Alabama’s Chilton and Bibb counties at 7:51 p.m. CDT, moving northeast at 50 mph. Radar also indicated rotation near Waldo in Talladega County, placing northeastern Talladega, south-central Calhoun, and northwestern Clay counties under a tornado warning until 8:30 p.m.
In Georgia, the NWS Peachtree City office issued a tornado warning for north-central Gilmer and northwestern Fannin counties until 9:30 p.m. EDT. A storm capable of producing a tornado was moving northeast at 55 mph near Cherry Log, approximately 7 miles west of Blue Ridge.
Tennessee also faced significant threats, with the NWS Morristown issuing a tornado warning for parts of Rhea, Sequatchie, Bledsoe, and Hamilton counties. A storm with radar-indicated rotation was moving at 60 mph, threatening several rural communities.
Residents in affected areas were urged to take shelter immediately and avoid windows, as flying debris posed a serious risk. The storms continued to move rapidly across the region, with additional warnings possible overnight.
