Tuscaloosa, Ala. – Heavy thunderstorms have triggered dangerous flash flooding across Tuscaloosa this afternoon, putting major roads and low-lying areas at risk through 5:15 p.m. Saturday. Drivers near the University of Alabama campus and downtown attractions like Bryant-Denny Stadium are urged to avoid flooded streets.

According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, radar detected intense rainfall over southwestern Tuscaloosa County just after 2 p.m. Flash flooding is either ongoing or expected to develop rapidly, impacting small creeks, underpasses, and urban areas with poor drainage.

Flood-prone locations include Northport, Holt, Coker, and key commercial centers like University Mall and McFarland Mall. Critical infrastructure such as Tuscaloosa Regional Airport, the University of Alabama Quad, and major thoroughfares near Shelton State Community College are also at risk.

Residents should avoid non-essential travel and never attempt to cross flooded roads. Remember the safety rule: Turn around, don’t drown. Rising water can quickly overwhelm vehicles and pedestrians alike.

This warning remains in effect until 5:15 p.m., with additional advisories possible if storms persist. Stay tuned for updates as conditions evolve.
