According to the National Weather Service, the wind chill in Birmingham this morning is as low as 10°F, with some areas dropping even lower. The frigid weather will linger, with highs today reaching only the upper 20s to lower 30s. Tonight, temperatures will drop to around 18°F, making frostbite and hypothermia a concern for those outdoors without proper clothing.
Residents are urged to wear layers, including hats, gloves, and face masks, to protect exposed skin. Avoid outdoor activities if possible, and ensure pets remain indoors. Drivers on I-65 and other roadways should stay alert to icy patches, particularly in shaded areas or on bridges.
Looking ahead, Tuesday will bring slightly warmer conditions but still remain cold, with highs near 31°F and a chance of light snow flurries in the afternoon. Lows Tuesday night will return to the low 20s. By Wednesday, sunny skies and highs near 37°F provide a gradual warm-up, but overnight lows will remain below freezing throughout the week.
With subfreezing temperatures extending through Thursday, residents should keep pipes insulated and allow faucets to drip to prevent freezing. Regularly check on elderly neighbors and family members to ensure they have adequate heating.
