Mobile, AL – An Extreme Cold Warning has been issued for portions of south central and southwest Alabama, the Florida Panhandle, and southeast Mississippi. The warning is in effect from 9 p.m. Wednesday to 9 a.m. Thursday, as temperatures and wind chills plunge to dangerous levels.

According to the National Weather Service, wind chills as low as 10 degrees are expected, creating significant risks for hypothermia and frostbite. Prolonged exposure to freezing conditions could also lead to ruptured water pipes and structural damage.

The advisory affects counties in Alabama, including Mobile, Baldwin, and Escambia, as well as Escambia, Santa Rosa, and Okaloosa counties in Florida. Parts of southeast Mississippi, including Wayne and Perry counties, are also impacted.

Residents are urged to dress in layers and cover exposed skin to prevent cold-related injuries. Additional precautions include keeping pets indoors, providing outdoor animals with adequate shelter, and wrapping water pipes to prevent freezing.

Officials remind the public to avoid using portable heaters or grills indoors to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Vulnerable individuals, such as the elderly, should be checked on frequently.
