Birmingham, AL – A Code Red Air Quality Alert has been issued for Jefferson and Shelby counties on Tuesday, March 11, due to high particulate matter levels, according to the Jefferson County Department of Health (JCDH).
Under Code Red conditions, air quality is deemed unhealthy, with particulate matter concentrations reaching levels that may pose serious health risks. Individuals with heart or lung conditions, older adults, and children are advised to avoid all outdoor physical activities. Others should limit prolonged or strenuous outdoor exertion.
JCDH recommends several precautionary measures to reduce exposure to harmful particles. Residents are encouraged to limit outdoor activities, walk instead of jog, and avoid exercising near busy roads. Additionally, reducing vehicle use, limiting engine idling, and utilizing public transportation or carpools can help mitigate air pollution. The use of gasoline-powered lawn and garden equipment should also be avoided.
Indoor air quality may also be affected by outdoor pollution. To minimize exposure, residents should keep windows and doors closed and reduce activities that generate indoor pollutants, such as burning candles, using incense, or cooking with wood, coal, or oil.
Those experiencing difficulty breathing should move indoors immediately. For more updates on air quality conditions, residents can visit the JCDH website or the Alabama Department of Environmental Management.
