Chicago, IL – Northern Illinois residents should prepare for accumulating snow starting late Thursday night and continuing into Friday. The snow may mix with freezing drizzle, particularly around Rockford, creating slippery roads and hazardous driving conditions during the Friday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service, snow will begin overnight and last into Friday morning, gradually ending from west to east by the afternoon. Snowfall totals are expected to range from a dusting northwest of Rockford to up to three inches in northwest Indiana and east-central Illinois. Areas near I-55 will likely see heavier accumulation, while freezing drizzle could impact areas highlighted on weather maps.
Drivers are advised to allow extra travel time and use caution as reduced visibility and icy spots are likely during the morning hours. The weather service has forecasted temperatures between 28-30 degrees Friday morning, dropping to lows of 14-18 degrees by evening.
After Friday’s snowfall, a brief break in wintry weather is expected Saturday before light snow returns Sunday. Monday could bring blustery conditions, with temperatures dropping to single digits and wind chills as low as -10°F.
Residents are urged to monitor local forecasts and prepare for snow-covered roads, especially during the Friday morning rush hour. Officials advise delaying travel if possible and planning for slippery conditions.
