Abilene, Texas – Storms capable of producing 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail could disrupt travel and outdoor plans as early as Wednesday afternoon across west-central Texas.

According to the National Weather Service in San Angelo, a Level 2 of 5 severe weather risk has been issued for parts of the Big Country, including Abilene, with storms expected to develop Wednesday afternoon and persist into the late evening hours. The primary threats include hail up to 1 inch in diameter, wind gusts exceeding 60 mph, and frequent lightning.

The highest risk zone stretches from Abilene north toward Haskell, while areas including San Angelo, Sweetwater, and Brownwood remain under a marginal risk. Storms may begin developing during the afternoon commute and continue into the evening, creating hazardous driving conditions along U.S. Highway 277, Interstate 20, and regional roadways.

Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, avoid parking under trees, and remain indoors during thunderstorms. Ensure mobile devices are charged and weather alerts are enabled to receive warnings quickly.

The storm threat will continue through Wednesday night, and additional advisories may be issued as conditions evolve across west-central Texas.
