As severe weather continues to sweep across the country, 2024 has recorded the third-highest number of tornadoes in U.S. history. With 1,389 tornadoes reported through July, this year’s storm activity falls just behind 2011 and 2008, according to the NOAA Storm Prediction Center. While tornadoes have historically concentrated in the Midwest and Southern Plains, this season’s activity has impacted regions across the nation, underlining a larger trend of extreme weather events nationwide.

April and May were especially intense, with April seeing 356 tornadoes—the second-highest for that month in 75 years. Friday’s forecast suggests another round of severe weather, with thunderstorms and potential tornadoes expected to affect various parts of the country. Residents in high-risk zones are advised to stay alert, review their emergency plans, and monitor local weather alerts to ensure safety as the weekend approaches.

According to NOAA data, the high volume of tornadoes this year indicates an increasingly active tornado season, with states beyond the traditional “Tornado Alley” experiencing damaging winds, large hail, and significant property loss. These storms have hit both urban and rural areas, contributing to a rise in storm-related damage claims and disrupting lives across the U.S.
