New York, NY – A noticeable October cooldown could put parts of New York, Pennsylvania and the Northeast on watch for the season's first frost next week as a colder weather pattern develops across the eastern United States.
According to NOAA's Climate Prediction Center, the Oct. 5 11 temperature outlook favors below normal temperatures across a broad section of the Northeast and Mid Atlantic , including New York and Pennsylvania. The outlook was issued Sunday, Sept. 27.
The colder signal does not mean a frost is guaranteed, but it raises the possibility that some inland communities could experience their first temperatures cold enough for frost as early October begins.
The greatest concern would likely be across interior New York and Pennsylvania , particularly colder valleys, rural areas and higher terrain where overnight temperatures can fall faster than in major cities or along the immediate coast.
Frost generally becomes possible when temperatures near the ground drop into the 30s under favorable conditions. However, the Climate Prediction Center's map shows temperature trends rather than specific overnight lows, meaning it is still too early to determine exactly where freezing or near freezing temperatures could occur.
The National Weather Service is also highlighting a broader transition toward cooler weather as October approaches. In a Monday update, the agency's Northern Indiana office said temperatures would remain warm through midweek before a cold front brings showers and thunderstorms Thursday, followed by a cooler trend.
For New York and Pennsylvania, residents with sensitive outdoor plants may want to monitor local forecasts closely through the weekend.
No widespread frost or freeze advisory for the region is indicated by the information provided so far, but the Oct. 5 11 period bears watching as colder air becomes more likely.
