Rhode Island – Heavy rain could pound Providence streets Sunday, leaving standing water and sharply reduced visibility during the busiest downpours. Thunderstorms join a 100% rain chance before conditions begin improving Monday.

According to the National Weather Service, showers and thunderstorms are expected before 2 p.m. Sunday. Some storms could produce heavy rainfall. Between 1 and 2 inches of rain is possible.

That amount makes Sunday the clear weather-impact period for Providence. Temperatures reach about 75 degrees, while south winds run 5 to 8 mph.

Drivers should prepare for water-covered pavement along I-95, I-195 and Route 10 during heavier rain. Slow down and leave additional space between vehicles. Never drive through a flooded roadway.

The NWS outlook does not specify a tornado or severe thunderstorm threat. However, thunderstorms remain possible, making lightning an important concern for anyone outdoors.

Visibility may remain an issue after the rain ends. Patchy fog develops Sunday night as temperatures settle near 63 degrees.

Monday begins with a 30% chance of showers, mainly before 9 a.m. Conditions then improve quickly. Mostly sunny skies take over with a high near 75.

A sharper temperature change follows Monday evening. Providence falls to around 52 degrees by early Tuesday, a 23-degree drop from Monday's high.

Tuesday brings sunshine and a cooler high near 71. Wednesday rebounds to around 76 under mostly sunny skies.

Thursday becomes warmer still, reaching about 79 degrees. A 30% shower chance returns Thursday night.

Sunday remains the period demanding the most attention. Check road conditions before traveling and allow extra time if heavy rain crosses I-95. Seeing flooding or heavy rain around Providence? Tell us what conditions look like where you are.
