Group estimates property tax impact of Evers
(The Center Square) – A Wisconsin advocacy group has attempted to estimate the impact of Gov. Tony Evers’ 400-year school funding veto by creating a tool to estimate the property tax impact of the $325 per pupil funding increase allowance.
Voters will have the chance to eliminate a governor’s partial veto power by blocking its use to “create or increase or authorize the creation or increase of any tax or fee” with a constitutional amendment on the November ballot.
Evers used the veto power to erase numbers and a hyphen in the school appropriation portion of the budget bill to change the year “2024-25” to “2425.”

The property tax increase estimator, created by the Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty, looks at the potential increase in taxes since the start of the $325 per year allowance. Since the amount local taxpayers pay for schools also depends on state funding levels, the estimator assumes that state funding will remain the same throughout the years.
For someone who owns a $250,000 appraised home in the Milwaukee School District, the property tax increase would be $479 through this school year and $958 by 2030-31.
Those in the Madison Metropolitan School District would have seen a $188 increase though this school year and would see a $366 increase due to the veto by 2030-31 on the same value home.
In Green Bay, the owner of a $250,000 home would have seen a $408 increase through this fall and $816 through 2030-31.
