Florida weather is turning hot, sticky and stormy across the Orlando metro this afternoon as towering clouds bubble over Central Florida and temperatures surge toward 90 degrees. The air already feels heavy near downtown Orlando, where bright sunshine quickly gives way to darkening skies and building thunderstorms through the late afternoon commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop after 3 p.m. with rain chances around 60% today and increasing storm coverage through midweek. Gusty winds near 20 mph and brief torrential downpours may create hazardous driving conditions along Interstate 4, the Beachline Expressway and routes surrounding Orlando International Airport.

Localized flooding on low-lying roads remains possible where storms repeatedly move across the same neighborhoods. Lightning will also become a major concern for outdoor Memorial Day events, theme park visitors and afternoon sports activities. Drivers should expect sudden visibility drops during heavier rain bursts, especially near Kissimmee, Winter Park and the attractions corridor.

The broader Southeast remains locked into a humid and unstable weather pattern as tropical moisture feeds northward into Florida. While widespread severe weather is not expected, isolated stronger storms could still produce small hail and damaging wind gusts during the hottest part of the afternoon.

Temperatures remain firmly in summer territory through the week, with highs hovering near 89 to 90 degrees each afternoon. The repeated heat and humidity will continue fueling nearly daily thunderstorms through Thursday before slightly drier air tries to edge into parts of Central Florida late next week.

Five Day Outlook for Orlando, Florida:

  • Monday: Mostly sunny with afternoon thunderstorms, high near 90°F
  • Tuesday: Mostly sunny with scattered storms, high near 90°F
  • Wednesday: Thunderstorms likely, high near 89°F
  • Thursday: Showers and thunderstorms likely, high near 89°F
  • Friday: Storms likely with humid conditions, high near 88°F
